2012 Hugos: Semiprozines
Jul. 18th, 2012 09:27 pm- Apex Magazine
- Lightspeed
- Interzone
- New York Review of Science Fiction
- Locus
Apex was the clear winner for me, because I liked every story in the sample issue and also really enjoyed the literary survey "The Australian Dark Weird". Locus comes last; it's a perfectly fine trade magazine aimed at SF writers, but it's not that interesting. The sample issue of NYRSF was only moderately better, with a long piece on Brian Aldiss that I couldn't finish. Choosing between Interzone and Lightspeed was difficult because the fiction in both was kind of mixed. Lightspeed's mix of fiction followed by non-fiction pieces that often reflected on the fiction was an editorial approach I've never seen before, and I liked it, so it got the #2 slot.
